Why this happens

Alcohol affects how the liver processes warfarin. Short-term (binge) drinking can slow down the breakdown of warfarin, leading to higher levels in the blood and a higher risk of bleeding. Long-term heavy drinking can speed up the breakdown of warfarin, making it less effective. Alcohol also thins the blood slightly on its own.

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking warfarin. If you do choose to drink, you must stay well within the low-risk guidelines (no more than 14 units a week) and spread them out evenly. Avoid 'binge drinking' (drinking a lot in one go) as this is particularly dangerous. You should have your INR (blood clotting test) monitored regularly by your doctor.
