Taking alcohol with lamotrigine can significantly increase the side effects of the medication. You may feel much more drowsy, dizzy, or lightheaded than usual. It can also make it harder to concentrate or think clearly, and may affect your physical coordination, increasing the risk of falls or accidents. Additionally, for some people, alcohol can trigger the very seizures or mood changes that lamotrigine is being used to treat.

Why this happens
Both alcohol and lamotrigine affect the central nervous system (the brain). When used together, they have an 'additive effect,' meaning they strengthen each other's sedative properties. Alcohol can also interfere with the stability of the condition the medication is treating.

Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel any side effects. If you choose to drink, keep it to a minimum and see how you react in a safe environment first. Always discuss your alcohol intake with your doctor, as they may have specific advice based on why you are taking lamotrigine.
