Taking sertraline with cannabis (often referred to as '25' in certain contexts or slang) can increase the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion. There is also a rare but serious risk of 'serotonin syndrome', where levels of a brain chemical called serotonin become too high. Additionally, it is illegal to drive with any cannabis in your system in the UK.

Why this happens
Both substances affect brain chemicals and are processed by the same enzymes in the liver. Cannabis can slow down how quickly the liver breaks down sertraline, leading to higher levels of the medicine in your blood. Both substances also increase serotonin activity, which can lead to overstimulation of the nervous system.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is best to avoid using cannabis while taking sertraline. If you choose to use both, monitor yourself closely for extreme drowsiness, rapid heartbeat, or agitation.
