Taking 5-HTP and levothyroxine together may lead to an excessive increase in serotonin levels in the brain. This can cause a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Symptoms can include shivering, diarrhoea, confusion, severe muscle tightness, fever, and even seizures. Additionally, if your thyroid levels are not well-controlled, 5-HTP might affect your heart rate or blood pressure.

Why this happens
Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone) can increase the sensitivity of receptors in the brain to serotonin. 5-HTP is a building block that the body uses to produce more serotonin. When used together, the thyroid hormone can 'supercharge' the effect of the extra serotonin produced by the 5-HTP, potentially leading to dangerously high levels of serotonin activity.
