Why this happens

Both atorvastatin and alcohol are processed by the liver. Drinking alcohol puts extra strain on the liver, making it more likely that you will experience side effects. Heavy drinking can also lead to a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis, where muscle tissue breaks down.

It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking atorvastatin. You should especially avoid 'binge drinking'. If you have a history of liver disease, you must speak to your doctor before drinking any alcohol with this medication. Seek medical help immediately if you notice unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, or if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow.
