Can I take Bisoprolol and Turmeric together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking turmeric alongside bisoprolol may lead to an increased risk of low blood pressure (hypotension) or a very slow heart rate (bradycardia). Turmeric may also slightly increase the risk of bruising or bleeding if you are taking bisoprolol for certain heart conditions.

Why this happens

Turmeric contains curcumin, which has natural blood-thinning properties and may also lower blood pressure. When combined with bisoprolol (a beta-blocker that lowers heart rate and blood pressure), the effects can add together. Additionally, some studies suggest turmeric might interfere with liver enzymes (like CYP3A4) that help break down medications, potentially leading to higher levels of bisoprolol in your system.

Use caution when combining these two. If you decide to take turmeric supplements, monitor your blood pressure and heart rate regularly. Watch out for signs of low blood pressure such as dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint. It is best to inform your GP or pharmacist before starting high-dose turmeric supplements, especially if you are already prone to low blood pressure.
