Taking these two medicines together can significantly increase the levels of buspirone in your blood. This makes you much more likely to experience side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, headache, and feeling light-headed. There is also a small risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome, which can cause shivering, sweating, confusion, and a fast heartbeat.

Why this happens
Fluvoxamine blocks a specific enzyme in your liver (called CYP3A4) that is responsible for breaking down buspirone. Because the liver cannot clear the buspirone as quickly as usual, the medicine builds up in your system. Additionally, both drugs affect a chemical in the brain called serotonin, which can lead to an additive effect.
