Taking magnesium supplements or magnesium-based antacids at the same time as clopidogrel may slightly reduce how much clopidogrel your body absorbs. This could potentially make the clopidogrel less effective at preventing blood clots.

Why this happens
Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of clopidogrel in the digestive tract. Additionally, some magnesium-based antacids increase the pH of the stomach, which can alter how the medication dissolves and enters the bloodstream.
What you should do
Back to contentsTo be safe, it is best to separate the doses. Take your clopidogrel at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking any magnesium supplements or antacids. If you are taking magnesium for a specific medical condition, discuss the timing with your pharmacist or doctor.
