Can I take Codeine linctus and Sulfasalazine together?

Codeine can cause constipation, which may slow down the movement of food and medicine through your gut. This could potentially change how much sulfasalazine your body absorbs, although this is unlikely to cause serious harm for most people.

Why this happens

Codeine is an opioid that slows down the muscles in the digestive tract (reduced gastrointestinal motility). Sulfasalazine relies on reaching the large intestine to be broken down into its active parts. If codeine slows the gut too much, it could theoretically alter the timing or effectiveness of the sulfasalazine.

You can generally take these together, but monitor yourself for increased constipation. Drink plenty of water and eat high-fibre foods. If you notice your bowel condition (for which you take sulfasalazine) getting worse while taking codeine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
