Can I take Copper and Vitamin b12 together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking high doses of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) alongside vitamin B12 can break down the B12 in your digestive system, making it less effective. While copper itself does not directly block B12, it acts as a 'catalyst' that speeds up this destruction if vitamin C is also present. On its own, copper and B12 do not have a significant direct interaction, but they are often found together in multivitamin supplements where this process can occur.

Why this happens

In the presence of copper and vitamin C, vitamin B12 (cobalamin) undergoes an oxidation-reduction reaction. The copper ions facilitate the destruction of the B12 molecule by vitamin C, converting it into inactive analogues that the body cannot use.

If you are taking separate supplements, try to take your vitamin B12 at least 2 hours apart from high-dose vitamin C or copper supplements to ensure maximum absorption. If they are combined in a single multivitamin tablet, the amount of B12 is usually adjusted by the manufacturer to account for this, but it is still best to monitor your B12 levels if you have a known deficiency.
