Ingredients for Garlic cheddar biscuits

  • 330 g plain flour

  • 15 g baking powder

  • 2.5 g garlic powder, plus an extra 1.25 g (optional)

  • 3 g salt

  • 225 g white vegetable fat (e.g. Trex)

  • 240 ml buttermilk

  • 120 g grated cheddar cheese

  • 30 g butter, melted

How to make Garlic cheddar biscuits

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (fan) or 230°C (conventional).

  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, and salt.

  3. Using a pastry cutter or two forks, cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

  4. Add the buttermilk and cheese with a fork, then stir until a soft dough forms.

  5. Drop spoonfuls of the dough (about 60 ml each) onto a greased baking tray.

  6. In a small bowl, combine the butter and the remaining ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder (if using); brush this mixture over the tops of the biscuits.

  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until golden brown.
