Can I take Nikethamide and Venlafaxine together?

Why this happens

Both drugs affect the central nervous system. Nikethamide is a respiratory stimulant that increases brain activity, while venlafaxine (an antidepressant) can also increase electrical activity in the brain. When used together, their effects can add up, over-stimulating the brain and potentially triggering a seizure.

You should avoid taking these two medications together. If you have a history of epilepsy or seizures, this combination is particularly risky. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using nikethamide if you are already taking venlafaxine. Depression and anxiety disorders

Venlafaxine can cause an increase in suicidal thoughts or self-harm, particularly when first starting treatment or changing doses. Monitor your mood closely and seek urgent medical help if you notice any distressing changes.

Serotonin Syndrome - venlafaxine

Seek immediate medical help if you experience high fever, agitation, confusion, or muscle twitching, especially when starting or increasing the dose. This can be life-threatening if combined with certain other medicines.

Discontinuation Syndrome

Do not stop taking venlafaxine suddenly. Doing so can cause severe withdrawal symptoms like 'brain zaps' (electric shock sensations), intense dizziness, and anxiety. Your dose must be reduced gradually.

Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders

Nikethamide is a powerful stimulant that can trigger convulsions or seizures. It must not be used by individuals with a history of epilepsy or other seizure disorders.

High blood pressure (Hypertension)

Nikethamide can cause a rapid and dangerous increase in blood pressure and heart rate.

Asthma or obstructive airway disease

Nikethamide can cause severe respiratory distress or bronchospasm in patients with asthma; it should only be used in emergency settings under strict medical supervision.

Bleeding disorders

Venlafaxine can increase your risk of bleeding, such as bruising easily or nosebleeds. This risk is higher if you also take blood-thinning medicines (like warfarin) or NSAID painkillers (like ibuprofen or aspirin).

Alcohol

You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking venlafaxine. Combining the two can increase drowsiness, dizziness, and impair your coordination and judgement.

Caffeine (Coffee, tea, energy drinks)

Venlafaxine can increase levels of serotonin in the brain. High intake of caffeine can sometimes increase the risk of 'serotonin syndrome' or cause increased jitteriness and heart palpitations when taken with this medicine.
