Evacal (calcium carbonate and vitamin D3) can interfere with how your body absorbs azathioprine if they are taken at the same time. This could make the azathioprine less effective at treating your condition.

Why this happens
Calcium carbonate acts as an antacid. It can change the acidity levels in your stomach or physically bind to the azathioprine, which prevents the medicine from being fully absorbed into your bloodstream.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should separate the doses of these two medicines. It is generally recommended to take azathioprine at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking your Evacal supplement. Speak to your pharmacist to help you create a dosing schedule that works for you.
